This Adult Parish choir – founded and directed by Rebecca Hay (approximately 10 or so years ago) – has been presenting its music ministry at the 11.00 am Mass – on the 2nd Sunday of the month – except during the Covid period.
Practices are held in the Hibernian Hall/ Cafe Light (Ground Level, Parish Centre, 150 Yarra St, Geelong) at approximately 9.30 am – prior to each of the scheduled Sunday 11.00 am Masses. (occasionally practices are moved to Level 1 - the Pioneer Room - if Cafe Light is running on the same day)
The ‘Mixtures’ is a fun, social group of vibrant adults, from all walks of life with varying levels of skill & talent (no training necessary), who come together to sing at church. It is a relaxed environment, so if you love to sing and want to share your talent – and you wish to be a part of this group – you are warmly invited to call Rebecca at the Parish Office on 5222 1977 or email rhay@stmarysgeelong.com.au
Please note: all choir members must have a current WWC (Working with Children check), as required by the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
New members are always welcomed with a smile.
PRACTISES are held every Friday of the school term @ 3.30 pm in the Hibernian Hall/Cafe Light, 150 Yarra St, Geelong.
The St Mary’s Junior Choir was formed in 2003 by Rebecca Hay (OMG it has been going for 20+ years!) and is made up of children of primary/secondary school age who are part of our parish community. A child does not need to be enrolled at a Catholic school, but can be a 'parishioner' attending Sunday Mass at St Mary's Parish.
The Junior Choir is open to boys and girls from Prep up to Year 12.
2016 saw the format for the choir change – a split into 2 groups – Juniors and Seniors. The Seniors were called Lumiere (which means – ‘Shine’). Once you moved to Year 9 (and above) you were encouraged to become a part of the ‘Lumiere’ Choir and continue your singing journey... for various reasons at this stage, Lumiere is not running as a separate 'entity'.
Practices are held in the Hibernian Hall/Plaza Theatre (Ground Level, Parish Centre, 150 Myers Street, Geelong).
The Junior Choir practices every Friday after school from 3.30 – 4.30 pm.
Please note that practices are held during the school term and there are no scheduled practices – or Masses to sing at – during school holidays.
The Junior Choir sings at the 11.00 am Family Mass on the 4th Sunday of each month.
We also sing at other parish events, Carols, and the Christmas Eve Children's/Family Mass at 6.00 pm.
The Choir was created to be a place where children can socialise and sing in praise of the Lord.
It is a safe and happy environment where the kids are encouraged to participate, do their best, have fun… and are taught to sing together – guided by Rebecca.
New members are always welcome, so if you are interested, call Rebecca at the Parish Office on 5222 1977 or email: rhay@stmarysgeelong.com.au ... or just turn up to a practice on a Friday, introduce your children, fill out the enrollment form and leave contact details... and join in.
Parents are welcome to drop off or stay in the room during the practice.
If your child is unwell, especially if showing symptoms of cold/flu, gastro or COVID-19, please do not send them to choir practice. Singing enables the germs to course further and quicker than just talking, and we aim to keep our group as healthy as possible in these times. We do not want to have to initiate wearing a mask at choir practice.
